Cause it's
As you can see, my friend Brother Crow is very excited!
During this time, I not only like to think about civil rights, but also the African Americans in auto racing, some of whom you may or may not know.
Drag racing has the most Black drivers in all of American motorsports, especially at the local level. However, oval racing apparently doesn't have nearly as much, even at the local level. This is probably because more people in the ghetto and urban areas drag race on the streets, then take it to the strip, and work their way up the drag racing ladder. It's also worth mentioning drag racing started in southern California, and oval stock car racing started in the Southeast, in which the former was more racially accepting than the ladder during the time these motorsports originated.
There are quite a few race drivers who are billed as Black, but are actually biracial, of Black and White. Notable drivers like this include Chase Austin (DLM, K&N Pro), Ryan Gifford (K&N Pro), Darrell Wallace (K&N Pro), and Lewis Hamilton (F1). Chase Austin's dad, who was mostly or full Black, was a dirt oval race driver, and that's who he got his interest in racing from.
Wendell Scott was the first and currently only Black driver to win a race in NASCAR's top series, then called the Grand National division. This was in 1964. The officials purposely made a "scoring mistake" that put him in second, but was declared the winner the next day, and was given a cheap trophy.
In the '20s-30s, there was a whole African American Indy Car series, called the CSA, Colored Speedway Association. Their biggest race was called the Gold and Glory Sweepstakes, and was held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Dirt Track. Charles Wiggins was considered the league's best driver.
Tia Norfleet drives in, I think either Nationwide or K&N Pro, and is the daughter of former NASCAR driver Ted Norfleet, who I think did lower-level NASCAR racing cause I've never heard of him. She is the first African American female to drive in NASCAR.
Michael Cherry became the first African American to win a Dirt Late Model feature at East Bay Raceway, as well as being a FASTRAK Crate Late Model driver.
And of course we know about James "Bubba" Stewart, who is not only a good Black MX rider, he is also one of the best all time, putting him in the ranks with the likes of Jeremy McGrath, Travis Pastrana, and Ricky Carmichael. He is the first African American to gain major success and wealth in any form of American motorsports.
With us talking about me being Black, I thought this might brighten your day!
