I have played DTR, DTRSC and DTR2 for a long time now, but This is my first time digging into the files. I used a downloaded series as a template, and copied it to make up a couple of series for the IMCA mods and BLS sprint cars. It seems to work pretty well except that I can't adjust to the AI of the different tracks. I can win by three laps at one track, and than I go to Canandiagua and watch the AI cars just pull away. Right now, I have graded the AI on all of the tracks I have downloaded and I only make series of tracks with similar difficulties. Is it possible to go into the track AI files and adjust, or is that for system engineers only? I looked at the track.str files, and I see some difficulty numbers, but I don't really know what adjusting them will do. I searched the forums and came up with a thread that made a passing reference to adjusting them, but no real concrete information. I would guess that if I alter the best and worst sim mean times, I will slow down or speed up the field in simulation mode? I am guessing that if I alter the best and worst std dev (Assuming standard deviation?) I will alter the consistency of the laps, or else bunch up or spread out the field? Race difficulty would impact some aspect of the AI other than lap times? speedup, pure difficulty and prod difficulty, I need to figure out before I start messing with them. Anybody know of a quick guide to the meaning of the different lines, or should I just start experimenting with them one at a time and take lots of notes? (I just figured it wouldn't hurt to ask first so that instead of reinventing the wheel, I could make more neat things)

I will probably have a lot more questions as I delve into some basic editing and the like. I am actually teaching myself to paint skins as well. I hope to get to the point where I can make a couple of tracks too. (We need a Merritt, Auto City, Standish, Owosso, and Ionia Fairgrounds to keep us old geezers happy!) (BTW, I am old enough to have raced on Auto City, Standish and Owosso when they were dirt, as well as the pavement at Mt. Clemens and Tri City.

Thanks for helping out a new guy,
Dave

You might wanna try to talk to BLS_Ray about that, he's been working on an offline series for a while now, but he is having health issues at the moment.

I've actually tinkered with that a little bit. Down in the STR file for the track you can change the average laptimes of the AI cars, I'd make a copy of the track specifically for an offline series that way it won't come up as a mismatch if you choose to race with us. (Saying have 2 versions of the track. One for offline one for online) I remember I changed the average lap times and all it did was really make the cars go on their own lines just a little bit faster than they originally did. You might have to tinker with it a little to get it so that they're competitive and not blowing you away or you having them 10 laps down in a 12 lap race.
A main wins: 151*'

B main wins: 50

There are some Michiganders on here that would love to see those tracks. Tri City in MIchigan is on here now since they made it dirt and it looks really good. Hope you're able to learn how to make tracks!

If I had a year I could literally write a book on AI. AI for a quick race mode and AI for a series is completely different which is why it has taken me 6 months to put together the offline series. It's a ton of work and testing and only an AI nut like me would even attempt it. That being said....., after I release this enormous project and if the results are acceptable. I will be open to create future series with the proper skins and tracks but I will be taking orders for them and asking for a fee considering the enormity of the project.

I raced on the quarter mile a few times with the Pure Stock (I think Owosso called them Factory Stocks back then) I showed up wth the Late Model for some special event right after I bought it. (MSPA Wed. race maybe?) I remember not really being legal with the bodywork, and tires sticking out too much, etc... I tried it on the half mile with the Sportsman type tires and no spoiler, but it was a complete menace. I ended up running a Sportsman or Super Stock type of a class on the quarter that night and having a really good race with a guy for the whole feature. (Maybe 7th place or so) Lots of fun, but I was bummed that I didn't get to run the big track. For some reason, I never made it back to Owosso for any of the following MSPA races. I think I had to work that night one year, and I think we got rained out another.

BWS_BW43, I'm not THAT old! I was a young punk when I tried driving all of those tracks! Let's just say that I couldn't have bought a beer after the races! (Although my Sig line on another board is "Too young for Medicare, too old for women to care!")
I'm a couple of years away from the big five oh still.

As for the AI, I think I will make a copy of a track and just tinker with it and see what all of the commands do. Only way to learn I guess. Do the commands in the STR file for the lap times and difficulty only have an effect on Quick race mode? I figured that the two sets of time were for arcade and simulation modes. I think I can run either difficulty in Quick race. I will try all four combos, and see what happens.

Thanks for all of your help.

Yeah you can turn the AI up and down in track str. Which will kinda work in quick race mode but AI for a series is way different much more complex and time consuming.

All I did was change some of these numbers in an offline copy and it made the AI competitive after a little bit of trial and error.

[AI lap times]

best sim mean = 13.300000
worst sim mean = 14.800000
base mean = 13.300000
best arcade mean = 13.300000
worst arcade mean = 14.800000
best std dev = 0.035231
worst std dev = 0.252310
race difficulty = 2.000000
pure difficulty = 2.000000
prod difficulty = 2.000000
arcade difficulty = 0.862000
prod arcade difficulty = 0.787000
pure arcade difficulty = 0.890000
pure arcade mod = 0.777000

It was all done in a copy I had specifically for an offline series I threw together and it worked out pretty well.
A main wins: 151*'

B main wins: 50

C main wins: 5

D main wins: 1

Dash wins: 133

Heat race wins: 339***

Championships: 15*

I spent some time switching numbers and taking notes last night. I got my test mule track (East Lincoln) working fairly well by adjsuting the mean lap times and the difficulties. It puts up a pretty good fight now. Next, I will take one of the really fast tracks and bring it back to reality. One strangething I discovered is that big changesin lap times have very little effect during an actual race. The best lap time for the AI cars is much better, but I still beat them easily. (Even though most of smashed my fastest lap times) The total race time didn't change much until I started tweaking the difficulty. The only real effect of a two second change in lap times was that I didn't qualify as well. It's like the lap times for the AI cars got faster when I wasn't looking, but when I was racing side by side with them, the cars were pretty close to what they were before.

I will keep tinkering with the difficulty settings to learn how they change the gameplay in both modes.

Thanks again for all fo the advice. I am starting to wish that I had gotten involved in tweaking when I first started playing the game.
