Most recently she was the Faculty Manager of Art and Design at Monash. In fact, she describes herself as a "University groupie" having now worked at four different universities. Even time away from the University was spent at another institution dedicated to communicating ideas and information, the Melbourne Museum. She has an MBA and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Economics). She says about SPHPM, "I'm finding the people in the School very friendly, and it will be exciting to be involved in the development of the new School" Returning Staff Jill Blackman is a Research Fellow with MonCOEH. Jill returns to DEPM after extended maternity and long service leave. Outgoing Staff Gill Syres is on maternity leave for 12 months. Good luck Gill for the birth of the new baby. Course, conference, symposium reportsRosa Schattner, Coordinator SPIROGP Study presented at the Australian Asthma Conference held in Sydney 2021 October on 'SPIROGP Study: Findings of Baseline Spirometry in General Practice'. Early findings indicate that Chronic Obstructive Respiratory Disease (COPD) remains under diagnosed in Australian General Practice. Almost half the patients in the study with diagnosed asthma have moderate to severe disease The study is still following up whether regular spirometry will result in better management in general practice. The presentation was well received with about 100 in the audience. The Conference was facilitated by Julie McCrossin of Life Matters on ABC Radio and Good News Week on Network Ten and ABC TV. Highlights of the conference were presentations by Professor Stephen Leeder AO speaking on the Future of Health Policy in Australia TM and a live videoconference with Professor Bert Brunekreef speaking from the Netherlands on Air quality and its impact on Asthma TM. She writes: It was a great opportunity to improve my presentation skills. Especially, it gave me an excellent overview of the different techniques of presentations and increased my ability for confident communication and analysing audiences. Generally, the RogenSi presentation skills program provides the skills to communicate with greater confidence, control and flexibility by going through planning and delivery skills to enable tailored presentations for specific audiences. Report from Maida O TMKeefe on the MPH Information Night, 5 Nov: The night seemed to go well with approx.150 175 prospective students in attendance along with respresentatives from the four universities comprising the MPH Consortium, those being Monash, Deakin, Melbourne and La Trobe. The evening began in the lecture theatre with the MPH Program Coordinators from each of the four universities giving highlights of their university's program followed by a 'supermarket' event. Each of the universities had a stand where prospective students could visit and collect course information and discuss their issues with program coordinators / academics in attendance / admin staff. Monash University representatives were Flavia Cicuttini (MPH Coordinator), Max DeCourten (representing Clinical Epi / Clinical Research), Vanessa Murray (representing OEH), Elissa Farrell and myself. Marion B and Andrea E attended for the Burnet Institute. TM Dr Rob Hall recently visited Geneva, Switzerland, 46 November for the meeting of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) of WHO's Expanded Programme on Immunization. The agenda included discussion on the best use of a number of vaccines, including those for measles, human papilloma virus (HPV), hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, polio, rubella, Hib, pneumococcus, avian influenza and rotavirus. Much of the discussion related to the logistics of vaccine delivery, which for many countries are driven by poverty. New generation vaccines are expensive, often require stringent control of storage conditions and often require multiple doses. Disease eradication was a major topic, with the latest results of the polio eradication programme and discussion of proposals for measles elimination. WHO's Executive Board has requested a report on the feasibility of measles elimination, and Rob, as a member of the Measles Working Group will be attending further meetings next year to examine the case. Polio eradication is still tantalizingly close, with only 4 countries reporting cases due to endemic wild virus. However, 2 of these countries, Nigeria and India have reported an increase in the number of cases since last year.
