UNION, KY (October 30, 2011) - It was finally time for VLR_JW to celebrate in victory lane this season.
VLR_JW moved even closer to the top spot in points this week by beating out points leader VLR_18 to win his second North/South 60 at the Florence Speedway in dominating fashion.
VLR_JW, 27, of West Point, MS., started in the pole position after fast qualifier VLR_18 didn't make the automatic transfer in his heat race. This set the stage for JW's first victory of the season when he jumped out to the lead over outside pole sitter JFR*A2D and never looked back.
A regular in the VLR tour for the past few seasons, JW is proving that his second place point finish last season was no fluke. The Mississippi driver now sits just six points behind 5-time defending champion VLR_18 with five races to go.
"We had us a hot rod tonight," the happy VLR_JW said in victory lane. "I knew starting up front like that would help and once I got out in front I just had to hang on and not do anything stupid."
Points leader and 7-time VLR Champion VLR_18 of Brookfield, Wi., rallied from his seventh starting position to bring home a second place finish in the closing laps. The hard charging #18 machine kept VLR_JW from making up too many points with his win.
Las Vegas, NV. driver JFR*A2D continued his impressive season by notching a third place finish. The driver of the Budweiser Chevy has yet to finish outside the top four this season. VLR_Shock fell back one spot from his third starting position and came home fourth for his sixth top five in six races.
Finally triumphant after knocking on the door to the Winner's Circle several times this season, VLR_JW was jubilant during the post-race ceremonies. He executed several celebratory 360-degree spins in turn four to rile the standing-room-only crowd. He pounded on his car's roof after climbing from the cockpit. He then stood on the edge of his car and quickly stripped out of his uniform and flashed his breasts to the sellout crowd.
"I showed ya'll mine, now show me yours!," JW hollered to a group of women in the crowd over the PA system in his victory lane interview. "Show me them boobies dammit! Give the fans they moneys worth!"
After being calmed down by interviewer Jim Hardon, JW said about his prestigious win, "Oh yeah, this wins for the South, baby! The South has risen again, now let those shirts rise with it, ladies!"
VLR_18 seemed content with a second place finish, since it seemed unlikely before the race because he had to come from deep in the field.
"There's not much to say about it," said 18, who continues to lead the point standings. "I gave it my best shot and when I finally got to second he was far enough out there that I wouldn't be able to catch him."
JW jumped out to a quick lead over 20-year old A2D and steadily pulled away fom him over the course of the race. A2D held off VLR_18 for a while but eventually resigned to him and finished third.
"It was a fun race, I usually do good here," said A2D, who sits sixth in the point standings despite missing a race earlier in the season."I wanted to hold off Wheel (VLR_18) but he finally got around me.
"All in all it was a good race for the Budweiser Chevy and JW picked up a nice win for the south."
The race was rather uneventful except for VLR_18 battling his way through the pack and picking up second. There were no cautions in the sixty lap A-Main and VLR_JW cruised to a win by just over one second. VLR_McGee picked up his second top five of the season by finishing in the fifth spot.
BLS_Jason of Kokomo, IN., settled for a sixth-place finish after starting toward the back of the field. Finishing in positions 7-10 was WFO_Rainman of East Moline, ILL.; BLS_42 of Sparta, MI.; WFO_Stealth of East Moline, ILL. finished ninth in his first VLR race since finishing second at Florence two seasons ago; and JFR_4h of Hindman, KY., who rounded out the finishing order.
VLR_18 shattered the track record at Florence in qualifying. The Wisconsin native toured the half-mile oval in an earthshaking 11.22 seconds.
Heat winners were VLR_McGee, VLR_JW, and JFR*A2D. The B-Mains were won by VLR_18 and BLS_42.
The VLR tour will head south next weekend, visiting the newly renovated East Bay Motorsports Park in Tampa, FL. for the first ever VLR sanctioned Gen 3 race at the short track.
