(5-10-15) Bulls Gap, Tennessee – Team VLR headed to the famed, high-banked, 4/10 mile track of Volunteer Speedway 2015 also known popularly as Bulls Gap. 18 cars showed up for the Spring Thaw 50. The name is kind of irrelevant because it was 85 degrees at the track with no thaw needed.

Some of the drivers in the highly competitive A Main were rookies and some were veteran drivers. Some rookie VLR contenders included ICE_KingGinger and VLR_Momper with some veterans including BLS_BW43 and SKM_18.

Qualifying started out with Wheel (SKM_18) getting fast time at 12.12, beating BW by .02 seconds with a 12.14. VLR_Gage amazingly got 3rd with a 12.15 after proclaiming he was slow and did not like the track.

ICE_KingGinger cracked his first top five in qualifying at 4th place with a 12.17. Ginger was excited, but only as excited as you can get for being a ginger. VLR_Momper rounds out the top five with a 12.17 with his 4th top five.

With qualifying all wrapped up, it was time for the heats. With no surprise, Wheel took heat 1 in style advancing with KG as well. Heat 2 was took by BW along with hotrod, XCR_Orso. The last and final heat was took by two VLR teammates, VLR_Shock and Gage. B-Mains were won by Momper and SKM_Smallz.

With all the heats and consis wrapped up, it was time for the feature. At the drop of the green, KG jumped out to a lead with teammate ICE_KK21JR in tow. On lap 5, BW got up and past everyone in front and started his trek to catch the Ginger. Meanwhile in the back, Shock, Wheel, and Orso just raced nice and smooth in no hurry. Shock said he felt like he was starting to feel like he was losing his touch in dirt racing as he found it hard to work his way to the front over the tough field.

Disaster Struck on lap 11 with Smallz and Gage colliding for a meeting in which Smallz and KK were knocked out of contention. Meanwhile, Wheel was gaining on BW and KG fast. KG held on to the lead for 32 laps before BW got just low enough to force Ginger high and take the lead.

Ginger and BW raced side-by-side for two laps with the eventual result being BW pulling away. Behind the twosome, Wheel had caught them and was working his way around KG as Ginger then collided with the wall for a second time to allow Wheel to pass. But, Ginger’s nightmares didn’t stop there as Orso had caught him and Ginger did the same thing and nailed the wall. In reality Ginger got scared and did not want people to think he was cheating by winning a VLR race.

BW held on for the last 18 laps to win the Spring Thaw 50 and to snag his third career win at VLR. Wheel wound up 2nd. Orso finished 3rd. Ginger records his highest finish in VLR with 4th. Shock fought his way up to 5th. VLR teammates Gage and Momper finish 6th and 7th. Wheel’s little brother, SKM_DS5 finishes 8th. 2nd place starter, ICE_KK finishes 9th, and finishing 10th.

Next week, VLR heads to Magnolia Speedway v2 for the “Clash at the Mag 50”. Hope to see you all there!
